STEAM Activity: Glass Blowing Inspired By Dale Chihuly

Evergreen Park Community High School students in Ruth Bittorf and Maggie O’Shea’s English class made objects using glass blowing inspired by the great artist Dale Chihuly in a STEAM project during one of the final weeks of the 2021-2022 school year.

The students first learned about STEAM, an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the combination of multiple disciplines into one lesson. Then they researched Dale Chihuly’s background and completed a graphic organizer about his life and glass blowing techniques.

After watching a video about the science behind glass blowing, the students used plastic cups and markers to create the simulated glass.

Once the objects were finalized, Bittorf said they turned out even better than expected.
