Drive Renamed In Honor Of Former Mayor James Sexton

EVERGREEN PARK, IL – The driveway between Evergreen Park Community High School and its sports fields facing 99th Street has been renamed in honor of former longtime Evergreen Park Mayor James Sexton. Sexton was presented with the honorary street sign Thursday night during a ribbon cutting ceremony opening the school’s new athletic fields.

“Mayor Sexton has been instrumental in making Evergreen Park the wonderful community it is today,” Evergreen Park Community School District 231 Superintendent Tom O’Malley said. “He’s always been there whenever called upon, and now the drive leading into our sports fields will be known as Honorary Mayor James Sexton Drive. This sign will be proudly displayed at our 99th Street entrance.”

Motorists going both ways on 99th Street, one of Evergreen Park’s busiest thoroughfares, will see the brown sign just east of Kedzie.

Sexton was Evergreen Park mayor for 20 years before retiring earlier in 2021. He previously served as clerk and trustee for the village in a career of service that spanned more than 30 years.

“I’m truly honored by this particular event,” Sexton said to droves of Evergreen Park residents who attended the street re-naming ceremony.

“This school started making some great strides when Tom arrived here,” the former mayor added as the school unveiled its new, state-of-the-art baseball and softball fields during the drive re-naming ceremony.

Among Sexton’s most noted accomplishments as mayor include updating the streetscape along the village’s 95th Street corridor, redeveloping Yukich Fields at 90th and Kedzie and renovating the Evergreen Plaza shopping center with several new stores and restaurants adding locations inside the village limits.
